Team Turtle recently competed in the Open Qualifier for the China region of The International 2024 and progressed to the Closed Qualifier. Guided by Somnus and Chalice, this squad comprises five renowned Dota 2 competitors. The goal is to make a mark in the China qualifiers and secure a place at The International 2024!
The Formation of Team Turtle
Valve has decided to discontinue the Dota Pro Circuit for the current season and reinstate the traditional tournament invitation and open qualifier system. As a consequence, it is anticipated that many excellent teams will take part in the qualifiers, and Team Turtle is one of those competitors.
Somnus and Yang recently made an announcement on their respective streams, in which they disclosed their intentions to resurrect Team Elephant in order to get ready for the upcoming International Tournament qualifiers. At one point in time, this particular group was affectionately referred to as the Old Elephant.
With a team initially composed of Chalice, Somnus, Yang, Pyw, and 隰球 (PiQiu), they showcased their exceptional skills in the Super Dream Cup, organised by the Chinese streaming platform Douyu. Their victory over the formidable Chinese team KEV in the finals was a testament to their potential in the upcoming qualifiers.
Following the implementation of some changes at LGD Gaming, Pyw, who was under contract with the team, returned to the group that he had been a part of previously. Planet took over the position that had been previously occupied by a player initially from LGD who was well-known for playing position four.
Which Tournaments Are They Planning to Participate In?
As per the schedule, they were scheduled to participate in the preliminary rounds for both Riyadh Masters 2024 and The International 2024.
Unfortunately, they encountered some problems that prevented them from signing up for the Riyadh qualifiers. They exclusively took part in the qualifiers for TI 2024.
They achieved a commendable third place in the China region Open Qualifier #1 and will now embark on their journey starting from the lower bracket of the Closed Qualifier.
What Is the Reason Behind the Name Team Turtle?
The name is associated with a recent internet sensation involving Chalice. During a livestream, Yang revealed that Chalice generously bestowed his vast fortune upon his girlfriend, resulting in the Chinese community affectionately dubbing him "Turtle Man." Perhaps the Old Elephant drew inspiration from this and decided to name their TI qualifiers team "Team Turtle."
Which Players Are on Team Turtle?
Team Turtle boasts a roster of exceptionally talented athletes. Chalice and Somnus, two seasoned players from LGD, have consistently made it to the final day of The International on numerous occasions. Yang has achieved great success by winning championships at both the Stockholm Major and EPICENTER Major.
In addition, Planet had an impressive performance, securing a commendable third-place finish alongside LGD at The International 2023. Similarly, PiQiu also showcased remarkable skills and achieved noteworthy results during his tenure with Team Aster. Here is the current roster for Team Turtle:
- Player 1: Yang "Chalice" Shenyi
- Player 2: Lu "Somnus" Yao
- Player 3: Zhou "Yang" Haiyang
- Player 4: Lin "Planet" Hao
- Player 5: Yu "皮球" Yajun
The closed qualifiers for the CN 2024 International Tournament started on June 9, 2024.
A Short History
Despite all expectations, Team Turtle never managed to show a decent game, finishing at the semifinal stage.
G2.iG defeated Team Turtle in the semifinal of the loser bracket in the closed qualification for The International 2024. Team Turtle eventually lost the match. Their score was 1:2, which resulted in a loss for them. Both Yang "Chalice" Shenyi and Lu "Somnus M" Yao were unable to take advantage of the opportunity to play at TI.
Although Team Turtle was able to come back from behind in the first game, they had a different level of success in the other games. Both of the games were won by G2.iG, who gained the lead early on and led to the conclusion of the competition.
The members of Team Turtle got together prior to the beginning of the open qualifiers. They were placed as seeds in the lower bracket. In the past, Team Zero was successful in qualifying for The International 2024. Azure Ray and G2.iG are currently competing against one another in the final of the lower bracket for the remaining berth.
The closed qualifiers for the International 2024 competition will take place from June 9 to June 23. In NA, nouns were awarded a space. The tournaments in South America and Eastern Europe will be the next ones to be considered.
