Matumbaman and Liquid: Predictions, Military Service and Championship

Lasse “Matumbaman” Urpalainen, the legendary carry of Team Liquid, remains an iconic figure in the history of Dota 2 despite retiring from professional play. His words and actions over the years continue to resonate with fans and teammates alike.

Matumbaman’s Prediction: Two Years to Triumph

William Blitz Lee, Team Liquid’s coach, shared a humorous story about his former teammate:

"The funniest but truest story of all time. Matumbaman told me and our CEO during TI11 that the team would need two years to win TI. He just came along too early. Great foresight for such a simple guy."

While Blitz’s remarks were clearly made in jest, they hold a kernel of truth. In 2022, Liquid secured third place at The International 11, and two years later, at TI13, the team fulfilled Matumbaman’s prediction by claiming the championship title.

Life After Dota: Military Service and Well-Deserved Rest

Following TI11, Matumbaman officially retired from professional Dota 2. The Finnish player expressed his straightforward post-career plans:

"Just chill and do nothing."

However, reality had other plans. Urpalainen enlisted in Finland’s mandatory military service, marking a significant new chapter in his life:

"I haven’t served yet, so I think I’ll head to the army in January. We’ll see what happens next," he told Finnish outlet Yle E-Sport.

A Legend’s Legacy

Matumbaman’s departure marked the end of an era for many Dota 2 fans. However, his contributions to Liquid’s success—especially at TI11, where the team finished third—and his accurate prediction of their future triumph at TI13 serve as a reminder that great players don’t just win games; they leave lasting legacies.

Now, Matumbaman enjoys a well-earned break, watching his former team conquer new heights in esports.
