When and How was Dota 2 released?

Valve's announcement of Dota 2 caused a server meltdown at the turn of the century. However, the official release of Dota 2 came a few years later.

Dota 2, known for its complexity, has stood the test of time, attracting hundreds of thousands of players daily. In 2010, Valve finally confirmed the speculation and rumors by announcing Dota 2. IceFrog, whose identity remains a mystery to this day, was enlisted by Valve to assist in the production of Dota 2. Although the game became available nearly a year later, in 2011, its official release date was much later. Here are the details of Dota 2's release and other significant dates.

When was Dota 2 released?

Dota 2 was launched on July 9, 2013. Initially available on Windows PC, it was later released for OS X and Linux on July 18, 2013.

While the game had been accessible to teams and professional players for several months, it was first made available to the general public at Gamescom 2011, coinciding with the inaugural edition of The International. Natus Vincere emerged victorious in the first-ever International, claiming the lion's share of the $1.6 million prize pool.

The original NAVI lineup featured Danil "Dendi" Ishutin and Clement "Puppey" Ivanov, both of whom continue to compete professionally to this day. As of 2022, Puppey has participated in every International.

Dota 2 is the sequel to Defense of the Ancients, a mod for Blizzard Entertainment's Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos. The game features two teams of five players each vying for map control, with victory achieved by destroying the opponent's throne. Despite its steep learning curve, Dota 2 maintains a sizable player base even in 2023.

With hundreds of heroes, as well as a vast array of items, talents, and abilities to choose from, the possibilities for playing Dota 2 are virtually limitless.

Revenue Model

Dota 2's core game remains entirely free. Players have the option to purchase cosmetics and battle passes to access special features, but these purchases do not impact core gameplay. There is no pay-to-win advantage in Dota 2.

Each year, Valve releases a Battle Pass, with 25% of the proceeds contributing to The International's prize pool funding.

Dota 2 Esports

The International is Dota 2's premier event, showcasing top-tier professional teams and players. Valve hosts TI annually, with the prize pool being funded by the community.

Due to the pandemic, 2020 marked the first year without an International for Dota 2. The following year, Valve had to relocate the event due to travel restrictions in Sweden. In addition to TI, Valve assists in structuring the Dota 2 esports scene, allowing third-party tournament organizers to host Dota 2 Majors and regional leagues.

Dota 2 will celebrate its tenth anniversary in July 2023. It remains uncertain whether Valve plans to hold a commemorative event for the occasion.
